La Crosse Tribune - Waunakee firm proposes condos for Park Plaza

Only a Waunakee, Wis., firm has responded to the city of La Crosse's call for plans to develop the former Holiday Inn hotel site on Barron island.

Progressive Design's proposal includes building 98 condominiums in phase one; a restaurant, retail space, office and residential buildings in phase two; and 98 more condominiums in phase three.

The city sent invitations to about 120 development firms nationwide to submit proposals for the six-acre Park Plaza Drive site by last Friday.

City Planner Larry Kirch said he was disappointed only one replied.

The Redevelopment Authority will consider the proposal Thursday, he said.

Three proposals were filed when La Crosse County first marketed the property in 2001. Only two proposals were received in 2003. Both times, a proposal by local developer and Realtor Jay Hoeschler and SkipperLiner Marine Group owner Noel Jordan was selected, but negotiations broke down both times.

The city and county have agreed the La Crosse Redevelopment Authority should take the lead in finding a developer.
